Why We Built This
If you've ever worked in freight logistics, you know the frustration: you need an NMFC code right now, but the free resources are incomplete, and the paid databases cost hundreds of dollars per month. I've been there - calling carriers to verify codes, second-guessing classifications, and occasionally getting hit with reclassification fees because the information I found online was outdated or wrong.
So we built something different. NMFC Codes is completely free with the full database - all 6,609 articles, properly organized and searchable. No paywalls, no "register to see more" nonsense. Just the code you need, when you need it.
What You Get
Simple: instant access to every NMFC code. Type in what you're shipping (or the article number if you know it), and you'll see the classification, freight class, and category. Everything pulls from official NMFTA publications and gets updated quarterly.
We've organized the database three ways so you can find what you need:
- Search by keyword - "furniture", "electronics", whatever you're shipping
- Browse by category - 21 categories from Agricultural to Vehicles
- Browse by freight class - See all codes for Class 50, 100, 200, etc.
How It Actually Works
Here's a real example: Let's say you're shipping office furniture. You could spend 15 minutes digging through carrier websites, or you could type "furniture" into our search box and get instant results showing all furniture-related NMFC codes with their classes.
Each code page shows you:
- The full article description (so you know if it's the right one)
- Freight class assignment
- Which category and group it belongs to
- Sub-codes if there are packaging or material variations
The database includes: All 6,609 NMFC articles organized into 21 categories, 126 groups, and 18 freight classes (50 through 500). We update it every quarter when NMFTA publishes changes.
Search works three ways:
- Type the article number if you know it (like "100200")
- Search by keyword ("plastic pallets", "medical supplies", etc.)
- Browse categories if you're not sure what you're looking for
Works on mobile: The site is fully responsive, so you can look up codes from the warehouse floor, not just your desk.
Where We Are Now
The platform is live and fully functional. All 6,609 NMFC articles are loaded, search works fast, and everything's organized by category and class. We synced with the latest NMFTA publication in July 2025, and the next update is scheduled for October.
The site works on any device - desktop, tablet, or phone. No registration needed, no credit card required, no trial period. It's just... available.
Why Use This Instead of [Insert Paid Service]?
Look, I'm not going to trash other services. Some of the paid databases have great features if you need integration with your TMS or want API access. But if you just need to look up an NMFC code a few times a day (or week, or month), paying $300-500/month doesn't make sense.
Here's what we offer:

- It's current - We update quarterly from NMFTA publications
- It's transparent - We show where the data comes from and when it was last updated
Important note: Always verify codes with your carrier before shipping. Classifications can affect your rates, and carriers sometimes interpret codes differently. This site gives you the official NMFC data, but your carrier has the final say.
What's Coming
The core functionality is done, but there's more we want to add. Here are a few things we're working on:
- Better search filters - Filter by freight class, category, or keyword combinations
- Density calculator - Calculate freight class based on dimensions and weight
- Classification comparison - Compare similar items to find the right code
- Mobile app - Native iOS and Android apps for faster lookup
