How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the BOL as “NMFC 100160 – Hot Tubs, wooden, KD or Hot Tub Systems, boxed/crated; Class 70” and reference the applicable notes (items 100161–100163).
- Choose rigid crates or heavy-duty boxes with internal bracing; bundle staves, benches, and hoops, bag hardware, and add a moisture barrier to control wood swelling.
- For systems, pack pumps, heaters, and control packs together as one set; isolate electrical components with foam, and mark This Side Up and Do Not Stack.
- Add skid runners for 4-way forklift entry, keep dimensions within carrier limits, and photograph the packed unit to support claims if damage occurs.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 yields predictable rating, speeding quotes and reducing pricing variance across carriers.
- KD packaging lowers cube and can avoid oversize fees, improving LTL costs without compromising protection.
- Accurate use of NMFC 100160 reduces reclass bills and strengthens claim defense for premium spa shipments.
- Crated or boxed systems curb concealed damage, cutting replacement expenses and protecting customer schedules.
