How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density before quoting. Weigh each carton or crate and divide by cubic feet (e.g., 28 lb in 3.2 cu ft = 8.75 PCF); lower density drives a higher class.
  2. Use protective inner packs by item type: blade guards for knives, partitions for metal shakers, corner/handle protectors for chafing dishes and coffeepots, and secure moving parts on grinders or mop wringers.
  3. Reinforce long or awkward pieces like ironing boards or quilting frames with heavy-wall cartons or crates, add end caps, and palletize with no overhang to avoid punctures and rewrap fees.
  4. Ship only non-electric versions covered by this item (e.g., toasters, coffeepots). Keep sets together (nutcracker sets) and consolidate small kitchen tools into a master carton to improve density.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimized packaging raises PCF and can lower the density class, directly reducing LTL freight rates for lightweight, bulky items like ironing boards.
  • Single NMFC for many household utensils simplifies rating and WMS mapping, cutting time spent on product-by-product classification and accelerates quoting.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines tendering, helping avoid special handling surcharges and delays.
  • Purpose-built inner protection reduces damages on metal shakers, chafing dishes, and knives, minimizing OS&D claims, credits, and reship costs.
