How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package finished housings on pallets with corner boards and banding; if shipping loose, block and strap each housing to the pallet deck to stop slide and tip.
- Shield sharp 14ga steel edges with edge protectors so straps don’t cut in. Add VCI wrap or rust inhibitor if routing through humid regions or long storage.
- Load with flanges and cutouts facing inward and fill voids with foam or wood dunnage. Stack only if housings nest and frames support load; otherwise single-layer with “Do Not Stack.”
- On the BOL, cite NMFC 101525, Class 70, and note “loose” or “packages.” Include piece count and total weight for accurate LTL quotes, even though density isn’t used for this class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: Fixed Class 70 minimizes reclass fees and keeps LTL quotes consistent across carriers.
- Better cost control: Heavy sheet-steel parts rate more favorably at Class 70 than higher classes, improving freight margins.
- Fewer damage claims: Proper edge protection and securement prevent bends and dents that delay burner installs and field service.
- Faster operations: A single NMFC entry streamlines quoting and routing for HVAC, boiler OEMs, and distributor networks.
