Notes
Note 101683: NOTE-Applies on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 6, Division 6.2, Infectious Substance (Etiologic Agent), as defined in 49 CFR 173.134 and required to bear a notice to that effect on bills of lading and packaging.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the material fits the scope: infectious substances, biological products, cultures, patient specimens, RMW, sharps, toxins, or used health care products; check Note item 101683 for edge cases.
- Use U.S. DOT-authorized packaging: seal leak-tight primaries with absorbent for liquids, place sharps in rigid puncture-resistant containers, and secure strong outer packaging or overpacks on the pallet.
- Apply required hazmat marks and documentation: proper shipping name, biohazard markings where applicable, and carrier-accepted hazmat shipping papers; verify the carrier’s hazmat service level before tender.
- Plan special handling: maintain cold chain for temperature-sensitive specimens, segregate from foodstuffs and consumer goods, and alert consignee of delivery precautions and disposal protocols.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
