How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Determine density before tender: weigh the full shipment (including packaging), calculate cubic feet, and apply the appropriate NMFC 103300 class—lower density yields higher class.
  2. For cements and calcium silicate in boxes or packages, keep moisture out with liners and shrink wrap, and strap to pallets with corner boards to prevent bag rupture and settling.
  3. Protect fragile pieces like radiation-shielding windows or glass blocks with rigid inner bracing, foam/honeycomb pads, and crate or double-wall cartons; mark Fragile and Top Load Only.
  4. Compress and bundle mineral wool, felt, and wood-wool batts to raise density and cut class; wrap to contain fibers and cap sharp edges on sheet-steel silencers to avoid snagging.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density control can shift shipments into lower classes, directly reducing LTL spend for bulky insulation and batts.
  • Precise item descriptions (e.g., mineral wool vs insulating cement) under NMFC 103300 minimize reclass fees and invoice disputes.
  • Robust packaging prevents damage to brittle glass shielding and bagged cements, cutting claim rates and project delays.
  • Unitizing mixed insulation SKUs on tight, square pallets improves stowability, avoids cubic minimum issues, and speeds cross-dock handling.
