How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Apply Class 70 for boxed spark plugs made of glass, ceramic (pottery), or glass/metal combinations; no density calculation needed.
- Use snug inner protection—molded pulp cradles, foam cells, or corrugated partitions—to keep brittle insulators from touching and chipping in transit.
- Palletize cartons with edge protectors and stretch wrap; avoid placing heavy auto parts above these boxes and keep stack heights conservative to limit crush risk.
- List “NMFC 103760, Class 70, Non-Haz” on the BOL, and photograph the packout (inner cushions and partitions) to support claims and smooth carrier inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable mid-tier Class 70 rating stabilizes LTL quotes and helps prevent costly reclass or inspection fees.
- Non-hazardous status lowers compliance burden and reduces accessorial risk, streamlining carrier acceptance.
- Boxed-only packaging specification simplifies quoting and dock handling, cutting damage rates and claim payouts for fragile glass/ceramic parts.
- Simple classification (no density or dims required) speeds tendering for aftermarket distributors, remanufacturers, and restoration shops, saving time and admin costs.
