How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the product fits “strain insulators, NOI” and package each unit in sturdy cartons or crates with molded foam, pulp end caps, or corrugated dividers to prevent ceramic or polymer abrasion.
- List NMFC 103780 and Class 70 on the BOL, note “Non-Hazardous,” and specify packaging as packages to avoid carrier reclassification.
- If palletizing, stack packaged cartons with no overhang and use edge guards; mark Do Not Stack when porcelain units are susceptible to point loads or compression.
- For field kits or mixed hardware, isolate metal fittings away from the insulator body using spacers; example: six porcelain strain insulators per double-wall carton with interior separators.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL quotes with a fixed Class 70—no density math or complex breaks, streamlining rating and audits.
- Lower reclass risk when labeled NMFC 103780 and packed as packages, cutting unexpected fees and delays.
- Damage mitigation from proper internal cushioning reduces claims on brittle porcelain and composite units, preserving OTIF performance.
- Non-hazmat status widens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving cost control for utility and construction shipments.
