How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 104100 on the BOL and quote Class 50; no density calculation is required for these heavy cast iron pots.
- Mount each pot on a rated steel skid or hardwood cradle with blocking; use steel banding with edge protectors around the flange or lugs to stop movement.
- Mark lift points and center of gravity; arrange a forklift or crane suitable for the piece weight and avoid liftgate services that can’t handle castings.
- Protect critical edges and sealing surfaces with caps or guard boards, and keep interiors covered to prevent debris contamination during LTL handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 gives predictable rating and reduces reclass risk, stabilizing LTL quotes and invoices.
- Non-hazardous status avoids extra paperwork and surcharge exposure, improving transit speed and cost control.
- Proper cradling and securement lower damage claims on brittle castings, cutting OS&D costs and production delays.
- Clear NMFC usage streamlines carrier acceptance and minimizes special-handling fees tied to unclear commodity descriptions.
