How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 104200 and Class 50 on the BOL; describe as shingle bands, iron or steel, in packages, with piece count and bundle weights.
- Package for rigidity: palletize bundles, add edge protectors, and re-band as needed so strips do not bow. Shrink-wrap to limit corrosion and loose pieces.
- Load and handle correctly: keep factory strapping intact, lift from beneath with forks covering the full bundle, and avoid mixing lengths that create overhang.
- Give planners practical details even though class is not density-based, such as dimensions and stack limits. Example: 20 bundles x 50 lb on 40x48 pallet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low-cost rating: fixed Class 50 for dense steel means competitive LTL rates and predictable quoting.
- Fewer reclass fees by using the exact NMFC and packaging description; carriers see a clean, compliant BOL.
- Operational speed: simple non-density classification shortens intake, reduces need for inspections, and accelerates cross-dock moves.
- Lower damage risk and claims when bundles are braced and banded, keeping roofing supply orders intact to job sites.
