How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Reference NMFC 104200 and Class 50 on the BOL; describe as shingle bands, iron or steel, in packages, with piece count and bundle weights.
  2. Package for rigidity: palletize bundles, add edge protectors, and re-band as needed so strips do not bow. Shrink-wrap to limit corrosion and loose pieces.
  3. Load and handle correctly: keep factory strapping intact, lift from beneath with forks covering the full bundle, and avoid mixing lengths that create overhang.
  4. Give planners practical details even though class is not density-based, such as dimensions and stack limits. Example: 20 bundles x 50 lb on 40x48 pallet.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Low-cost rating: fixed Class 50 for dense steel means competitive LTL rates and predictable quoting.
  • Fewer reclass fees by using the exact NMFC and packaging description; carriers see a clean, compliant BOL.
  • Operational speed: simple non-density classification shortens intake, reduces need for inspections, and accelerates cross-dock moves.
  • Lower damage risk and claims when bundles are braced and banded, keeping roofing supply orders intact to job sites.
