How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize nested heads/bottoms with edge guards; strap in two directions and stretch-wrap. Example: 25–40 pieces per banded bundle, no overhang on the skid.
- Use rust protection for steel: VCI paper plus a poly sleeve, and add cardboard slip sheets between stacks to prevent scuffs on coated or lacquered faces.
- Mark the BOL exactly: “Barrel or Drum Bottoms, Heads or Tops, in packages — NMFC 104260 — Class 65, non-hazardous,” with bundle count and total weight.
- Keep bundles uniform and stackable; block curved pieces to prevent rolling. Avoid mixing with assembled drums or rings to maintain the correct classification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 rating eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass fees and speeding accurate LTL quotes.
- Dense iron/steel parts often price favorably at a fixed class, improving lane consistency and budget predictability.
- Non-hazardous materials simplify carrier selection and avoid hazmat surcharges, documentation, and training costs.
- Compliant packaging (banded, protected edges, stackable) lowers claim risk and minimizes accessorials for rework or repack.
