How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Rate and book using NMFC 104320 at Class 50; provide total weight, piece count, and longest length—no density required.
- Bundle grate bars with steel strapping in at least three bands; add edge protectors and set on 4x4 dunnage for forklift access.
- Note long pieces over 96 inches on the BOL and request long-freight handling; e.g., 10‑ft bar bundles at 1,200 lb each.
- Protect bare steel from corrosion with VCI wrap or light oil plus plastic; label bundles clearly as non-hazardous metal.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 50 reduces reclass risk and surprise charges.
- Faster quoting and tendering: no density calculation means fewer W&I delays.
- Packaging flexibility: pallets, crates, or banded bundles qualify—choose the most economical protection.
- Improved trailer utilization: straight, uniform bundles load tight and reduce damage on multi-stop LTL lanes.
