NMFC Description Class
104340.00 Bars or Rods, NOI, see Note, item 104342 50

Notes

Note 104342: NOTE-Applies on drawn or rolled iron or steel bars or rods, either square, round or otherwise shaped in drawing or rolling process, also on such bars or rods when bent, twisted or otherwise deformed, galvanized, ground, hammered, punched or sheared, but provisions will not apply if further work has been done.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm your product fits the NOI scope per Note 104342 (e.g., common steel bar, rebar, drill rod) and is not covered by a more specific NMFC item.
  2. Bill at fixed Class 50—no density needed. Put NMFC 104340 on the BOL and list both piece and bundle counts, such as 4 bundles x 20 rods.
  3. Bundle and band tightly with edge protectors and wood dunnage; chock round stock to stop rolling and use cradle skids for 12–24 ft lengths.
  4. Plan handling for long material: flag overlength to carriers, request side-load or conestoga when needed, and note forklift/spreader bar requirements to avoid rehandling fees.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 50 lowers LTL rates for heavy steel stock and streamlines quoting across lanes.
  • No density calculation reduces rating time and the risk of costly reclassifications.
  • Proper bundling and blocking cuts damage and claim exposure on round or long products.
  • Clear documentation with NMFC 104340 and Note 104342 compliance helps prevent accessorials and chargebacks.
