How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 104380 and Class 50 on the BOL, and select a packaged method (bundles, crates, boxed kits) to meet the “in packages” requirement.
  2. Bundle straight lengths tightly with non-marring straps and add wood skids and end boards so rods can’t roll or spear adjacent freight during cross-dock moves.
  3. Protect the finish: use edge guards and wrap with VCI paper or poly to keep moisture off iron/steel under copper or bronze coatings and prevent scuffs.
  4. For longer bars (10–20 ft), add intermediate banding every 2–3 ft and use full-length runners so forklifts can lift without bending the bundle.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 50—no density calculation or reclass risk when packaged correctly.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options for standard LTL networks.
  • Proper bundling and surface protection reduce coating damage, cutting claims and preserving machinability and conductivity.
  • Clear, single-article mapping (NMFC 104380) speeds rating in TMS platforms and streamlines procurement and quoting.
