How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm density meets 50 lb/ft³ or higher. Example: a 40×48×12 in crate weighing 800 lb is ~13.3 ft³, about 60 pcf—qualifies for NMFC 104500 at Class 50.
  2. Ship in packages: crate, box, or banded bundles on a pallet. Cap sharp edges, use dunnage to prevent nesting shift, and stretch-wrap with corner protection.
  3. Limit moisture and abrasion. Interleave paper or film between stampings, and secure oily surfaces to avoid slip hazards during handling.
  4. Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 104500, Blanks/Stampings, NOI, Class 50,” include total pieces, net/gross weight, and note non-hazardous status.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Achieve lower LTL rates via Class 50 for dense iron/steel parts, improving cost per pound on repetitive production shipments.
  • Reduce reweigh/reclass fees by meeting the 50 pcf threshold and packaging requirements, leading to more predictable invoices.
  • NOI coverage fits mixed shapes (washers, bracket blanks, cutouts), enabling consolidation on a single line item and simpler billing.
  • Non-hazmat commodity means broad carrier acceptance and no hazmat surcharges, speeding tender-to-pickup cycles.
