Notes
Note 104501: NOTE-Applies only on articles manufactured solely by a blanking or stamping process.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm density meets 50 lb/ft³ or higher. Example: a 40×48×12 in crate weighing 800 lb is ~13.3 ft³, about 60 pcf—qualifies for NMFC 104500 at Class 50.
- Ship in packages: crate, box, or banded bundles on a pallet. Cap sharp edges, use dunnage to prevent nesting shift, and stretch-wrap with corner protection.
- Limit moisture and abrasion. Interleave paper or film between stampings, and secure oily surfaces to avoid slip hazards during handling.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 104500, Blanks/Stampings, NOI, Class 50,” include total pieces, net/gross weight, and note non-hazardous status.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Achieve lower LTL rates via Class 50 for dense iron/steel parts, improving cost per pound on repetitive production shipments.
- Reduce reweigh/reclass fees by meeting the 50 pcf threshold and packaging requirements, leading to more predictable invoices.
- NOI coverage fits mixed shapes (washers, bracket blanks, cutouts), enabling consolidation on a single line item and simpler billing.
- Non-hazmat commodity means broad carrier acceptance and no hazmat surcharges, speeding tender-to-pickup cycles.
