How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack coils or cut lengths in sturdy boxes or wrapped packages, then secure contents with inner dividers or core plugs to prevent strap edges from shifting.
- Label each package with NMFC 104580, piece count, and coil weight; include core size if shipping coils so docks can choose the right handling gear.
- Use corner guards or sleeve caps over strap edges inside the box to avoid abrasion and to protect adjacent freight during LTL cross-docking.
- If cartons are palletized, keep box faces flat and band to the pallet; avoid overhang and add a top sheet so steel edges cannot pierce stretch wrap.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 simplifies pricing and often lowers LTL rates versus higher-class metal goods.
- No density calculation reduces reclass risk, preventing surprise charges and inspection delays.
- Clear article coverage for wire and non-wire strapping streamlines quoting across mixed SKUs.
- Consistent packaging in boxes or packages improves cube, speeds handling, and cuts claims.
