How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the parts meet the spec: bushing or mounting inner/outer cores, tubes, or shells made of 18‑gauge or thicker steel; thinner stock may not qualify.
- Choose sturdy packaging: heavy-duty boxes for small cores, closed-head drums for bulk or oily parts, and blocked skids for long tubes. Add end caps, VCI wrap, and dividers to prevent abrasion.
- Palletize to stop rolling and telescoping: nest tubes, use edge protectors, block with lumber, and apply two steel or polyester bands per bundle. Keep weight centered for forklift handling.
- Label and paperwork: mark NMFC 104650, Class 60, non-hazardous, list piece and bundle counts, and note any special handling like liftgate or no-stacking cones for tall skids.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 delivers predictable LTL rates for dense steel parts, often lower than density-based metal items.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines booking and avoids hazmat surcharges, cutting admin time and cost.
- Clear packaging pathways (boxes, drums, skids) reduce handling damage and claim risk, protecting tight production schedules.
- Using NMFC 104650 on BOLs minimizes reclass and rebill exposure, improving invoice accuracy and budgeting confidence.
