How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Rate and bill under NMFC 104830, Class 85. Use boxes for short cut lengths and sturdy wood crates for 6–12 ft channels to prevent bending.
- Bundle channels inside the box/crate with soft straps, add edge protectors on flanges, and cross-brace to stop flex. Use VCI or poly wrap to reduce surface rust.
- Isolate small hardware like hangers or screws in inner cartons so they cannot gouge channel webs or punch through the outer wall.
- Palletize the final box/crate for forklift handling, label “Steel Ceiling Vent Channels,” and mark piece count and gross weight for quick terminal check-in.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 provides predictable LTL quotes and minimizes reclass exposure for steel sheet channel profiles.
- Boxed or crated packaging aligns with carrier handling rules, cutting damage risk and OS&D claims on long, slender channels.
- Non-hazardous designation streamlines paperwork and typically avoids hazmat surcharges or special handling fees.
- Ability to consolidate mixed channel lengths and profiles in one crate improves cube utilization and lowers per-unit freight cost.
