How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 105000, Class 70 on quotes and BOLs since dowel pins (iron or steel) aren’t density-based; note whether they’re packed in bags, boxes, or drums.
- For tiny pins, seal in heavy poly bags then place in cartons; fill voids and label piece counts to prevent loss and speed receiving.
- If shipping in drums, line with corrugate or VCI, cap securely, and band to pallets; keep mixed sizes separated to avoid miscounts.
- Palletize cartons square with no overhang; add edge boards, stretch wrap, and a top sheet to curb metal-to-metal abrasion.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies rate shopping and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass and inspection fees.
- One classification covers bags, boxes, and drums, letting operations choose the best container without changing the freight profile.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and supports faster pickups with fewer special-handling accessorials.
- Tighter containment for small metal parts cuts shortages and damage claims, improving vendor scorecards and repeat orders.
