How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 105220, Class 50 on the BOL and describe as “Floor Plates, iron or steel” to avoid reclass or inspection delays.
- Build tight bundles with steel banding and hardwood dunnage; add edge protectors and a top sheet to prevent strap marks and edge damage.
- Place bundles on sturdy skids with three or more runners for 4-way forklift access; keep loads square with no overhang for safer LTL handling.
- If plates are oily or have mill scale, use slip sheets and stretch-wrap the bundle; mark gross weight clearly on each bundle and label as HEAVY.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 keeps LTL rates competitive for dense steel, lowering per-shipment costs compared to higher-class metal goods.
- Single, simple classification reduces reclass risk and disputes, speeding quotes and improving invoice accuracy.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies compliance and minimizes accessorials tied to hazmat handling or paperwork.
- Forklift-friendly bundles cut dock time and damage claims, keeping jobsites supplied and fabrication schedules on track.
