How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note the longest panel length and total bundle weight on the BOL; carriers plan handling and surcharge thresholds around max piece length.
- Bundle KD panels with edge protectors, band to sturdy skids, and interleave VCI paper; bag bolts, gaskets, and hardware by section and label clearly.
- Choose crating for thin-gauge or finished surfaces; add fork-entry cleats and blocking so tines don’t puncture or flex long sidewalls.
- Mark “Do Not Bend” and “Lift Evenly”; request no-stack cones for delicate panels and specify side-load or liftgate needs when site access is tight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- KD form reduces cube and oversize surcharges versus assembled flumes, lowering LTL spend per unit.
- Using NMFC 105280 on paperwork minimizes reclass disputes and speeds billing and claims resolution.
- Non-hazardous classification broadens carrier options and streamlines compliance, improving transit reliability.
- Standardized crating/bundling cuts damage on capital projects in water, mining, and stormwater, reducing costly field rework.
