How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 105300 and Class 50 on the BOL, and describe the material (iron or steel) plus finish (galvanized, painted) with bundle count and piece lengths.
- Bundle sections with steel strapping over edge protectors and wood dunnage at the ends to prevent bending; crate loose grating panels to avoid puncture hazards.
- Flag overlength pieces in advance; many carriers assess fees on lengths over 96–120 inches, so note longest piece and request side-load or long-fork handling if needed.
- Protect coatings with slip sheets or VCI paper; keep bundles uniform height for stack stability and mark center of gravity to guide forklift picks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 50 rating removes density checks and reduces reclass charges.
- Fewer handling units: tight bundling and proper dunnage speed cross-dock transfers and can trim accessorial costs.
- Broader carrier access: non-hazardous iron/steel components ship without hazmat fees or special documentation.
- Lower claim risk: reinforced ends and edge protection prevent bends and coating damage, keeping projects on schedule.
