How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List each pan or pot with the largest outside diameter and height, including rims or lifting lugs, so carriers know true handling clearances.
- Nest smaller pots inside larger ones with corrugated or foam spacers, then band to a skid; example: three 36 in pots nested on a 48x48 pallet.
- Protect rims and edges with corner guards and blocking; use 4x4 runners under heavy bottoms for forklift access and mark center of gravity.
- Ship clean and dry—remove oils, flux, or zinc residue, cap any drains, stretch-wrap to prevent abrasion, and label as non-hazardous steel.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 rating simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk for these steel pans and pots.
- Dense iron or steel construction often yields favorable cost per pound at Class 50 compared to higher classes.
- Nesting and banding can shrink cube, improving LTL rates and avoiding oversize fees or extra handling charges.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines paperwork, speeding up pickup and transit.
