How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Guards, manhole, KD flat — NMFC 105480 — Class 70” to avoid reclass and speed up carrier rating.
- Bundle guards flat with edge protectors and banding; strap to a 48x40 pallet with no overhang. Example: alternate fiberboard sheets between 10–12 guards for scratch protection.
- Cap or tape sharp corners, then stretch-wrap and cross-band. Add anti-slip mats or wood dunnage under bundles to prevent sliding in LTL transit.
- For jobsite deliveries, request limited-access and liftgate if needed, and mark total piece count clearly on labels for quick receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density math, producing faster, cleaner quotes and fewer invoice surprises.
- KD flat form improves trailer cube efficiency, letting you ship more guards per skid and cut cost per unit.
- Accurate NMFC mapping reduces reclass and claims risk, improving carrier relationships and cycle time.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees for predictable budgeting.
