How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use tight-head steel drums with secure bolt-ring lids and, if dusty fines are present, add liners to prevent leaks and keep terminals clean.
- Palletize drums on sturdy 4-way pallets, double-band with steel or heavy poly strap, and block to stop roll-off; avoid stacking if drums could deform.
- On the BOL, write: “Mill cinder or mill scale, in drums – NMFC 105720, Class 50” so carriers rate correctly without density data.
- Keep drums dry to prevent staining and mess during transit; stretch-wrap and corner-protect, and verify each drum’s gross weight meets carrier lift limits.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 rating streamlines quoting and eliminates density disputes, reducing reclass and rebill risk.
- Low class for heavy drums helps secure competitive LTL rates, improving margins on scrap/byproduct moves to foundries and cement plants.
- Standard drum packaging is widely accepted, cutting handling damage and claims while speeding cross-dock turns.
- Clear NMFC mapping accelerates TMS tendering and broker workflows, lowering admin time and improving rate shopping accuracy.
