How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize and block heavy castings: set each mold or plate flat on a 48x40 or 48x48 skid, add hardwood blocking, and band twice in both directions with edge protectors.
- Control movement and lift safely: for smooth-bottom plates, place anti-slip mats; for 1,000+ lb pieces, use spreader bars or lift eyes. Keep the center of gravity centered on the pallet.
- Protect machined faces and sprues: cap openings with plywood or steel covers, wrap bare steel with VCI paper, and pad sharp edges to prevent handling damage.
- Document clearly on the BOL: list “NMFC 105740, Class 50, Non-Haz,” include piece count and total weight, and note “Do Not Stack” if no interlayers. Example: two 1,200 lb sprue plates on one 48x48 skid.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 rating removes density disputes, cutting reclass and reweigh fees and making quotes predictable.
- Heavy iron/steel tooling prices efficiently at Class 50, improving cost per pound on LTL lanes versus higher classes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier availability and speeds tender-to-pickup, reducing dock dwell at mills and foundries.
- Robust skidding and protection reduce damage on high-value tooling, limiting claims and avoiding costly production downtime.
