How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use this entry for iron or steel piling only—H‑pile, pipe pile, or sheet piles—shipped as mill lengths or cut-to-length sticks.
- Bundle uniform lengths with steel banding and timber dunnage; mark piece count and length on each bundle and cap or protect ends when threaded.
- Call out exact lengths and the longest piece on the BOL; request long‑freight handling for sections over 12–20 ft depending on carrier rules.
- Select flatbed for oversized or mixed lengths; use dry van LTL only when bundles meet carrier length limits and are tightly banded with corner protection.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 keeps dense steel piling on low, predictable LTL rates, improving bid accuracy on foundation and marine projects.
- Single, non‑density classification reduces reclass bills and disputes, streamlining audit and AR cycles.
- Simple banded-bundle packaging minimizes material and labor costs while meeting carrier handling expectations.
- Clear, uniform coding supports fast TMS setup and repeatable routing from mill to jobsite or yard.
