NMFC Description Class

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Declare the item as wrapped, metal-strapped bundles of brass/bronze/copper plates, sheets, or strips under NMFC 106060, Class 60. Include bundle count and total weight on the BOL.
  2. Package bundles with firm edge guards under each strap and moisture barriers (e.g., VCI paper plus stretch wrap) to protect hot-dipped chromium/nickel coatings or copper cladding.
  3. Stage on skids or hardwood runners with forklift openings. Use wide forks or a spreader bar to support the full bundle width and prevent edge denting.
  4. Load bundles flat and avoid top-stacking. Keep strap locations accessible for securement and label each bundle for quick OS&D checks at terminals.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 60 eliminates density disputes, delivering predictable LTL quotes and fewer reclass fees.
  • Compliance with wrapped, metal-strapped packaging reduces damage claims on high-value nonferrous sheets and strips.
  • Non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and minimizes extra paperwork or surcharge exposure.
  • Clear bundle specs (count, weight, strap detail) improve handling efficiency, shortening dock time and transit exceptions.
