How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 106220 and Class 60 on the BOL; describe as “steel plate/sheet/strip, plastic- or rubber-faced (non-foam), in packages,” and include piece count and pallet dimensions.
- Stack flat on a pallet with interleaving film or paper to protect the facing; add edge protectors, cross-banding, and stretch-wrap, plus a rigid top sheet to prevent scuffing.
- Control moisture and heat—use a barrier (e.g., VCI paper or poly) if corrosion is possible and avoid tight shrink-wrap directly on the faced surface to prevent lift-off.
- Handle with fork extensions or a spreader bar to keep bundles flat; keep loads square, don’t top-stack heavy freight, and mark “Do Not Double Stack.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 60 removes density calculations and reduces reclass disputes.
- Lower claim risk by protecting faced surfaces from abrasion or delamination, improving customer acceptance.
- Faster quoting and simpler compliance—non-hazardous status and ‘packages’ packaging streamline LTL booking.
- Clear “non-cellular facing” description avoids misclassification with foam products, stabilizing freight rates.
