How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle straight lengths tightly with steel strapping at 3 points and wood dunnage; keep ends flush and cap or tape sharp edges (e.g., 10 props per bundle).
- Place bundles on sturdy skids or in steel racks sized to the prop length; block and chock to prevent rolling and mark safe lift points for forklifts.
- List clearly on the BOL: “Mine props (supports), iron or steel — NMFC 106380 — Class 50 — Non-Hazardous.” No density entry is required for this item.
- Flag long pieces at booking; most carriers apply ‘extreme length’ fees over 96 in. Add length notes and request appointments where mine site access is restricted.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: Fixed Class 50 reduces reclass disputes and surprise invoices tied to density calculations.
- Lower damage risk: Racked or banded steel bundles handle well in LTL networks, cutting claims and downtime underground.
- Faster turns: Standardized bundles speed loading at shafts and depots, reducing detention and improving crew utilization.
- Simpler compliance: Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges or special handling requirements.
