How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Bundle straight rods tightly with steel strapping over wood dunnage, cap threaded ends with protectors, and add corner guards to prevent punctures.
  2. Call out exact lengths and bundle counts on the BOL (e.g., 10 ft, 20 rods per bundle) and request side-load or pipe rack service when lengths approach carrier overlength limits.
  3. Crate smaller diameters or mixed sizes to reduce bowing; bag nuts, washers, and plates, and secure the kit inside the crate to keep components together.
  4. Chock round bundles on pallets, mark center-of-gravity, and label Do Not Top Load to stop rolling and bending during LTL handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 50 delivers a favorable rate base for dense iron or steel, lowering LTL costs versus higher-class items.
  • Fixed, non-density rating reduces reclass inspections and improves invoice accuracy, speeding up billing and claims resolution.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options for utility and construction shipments.
  • Consistent bundling or crating improves handling speed and damage prevention, keeping field projects on schedule.
