How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Package scrap in heavy-wall boxes (gaylords) or 55-gallon drums; line with poly to contain fines, close lids securely, and band containers to pallets for LTL.
  2. Keep the scrap clean and dry—no fluids, batteries, or oily residues. Mark the BOL with NMFC 106600 and “Class 50” and include a simple scrap material declaration.
  3. Balance and mark weights: cap box loads to safe forklift limits and keep pallets under typical 2,000 lb targets. Label gross and tare on each container.
  4. Plan pickup access: note dock or liftgate needs, and consolidate by container count rather than density since the rating is fixed at Class 50.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable spend: a fixed Class 50 rating removes density disputes and reduces costly reclasses.
  • Operational fit: boxes or drums slot easily into plant scrap programs, cutting handling time and expediting turnarounds at mills or brokers.
  • Lower risk of claims: clean, contained copper-clad scrap minimizes leakage, debris, and OS&D, improving carrier acceptance and transit reliability.
  • Faster settlements: correct NMFC usage and clear documentation help brokers and smelters process scale tickets and pay out quicker.
