Note 106722: NOTE-In addition to bundling requirements, sheet or strip, thinner than 16 gauge, other than in coils, not exceeding four inches in stacked height, must be protected around entire perimeter by a wooden frame securely metal-strapped or with perimeter protected by use of solid fiber angle forms of 1/4 -inch thickness secured by strapping. Frame must utilize wooden cross members and skid blocks or runners where necessary to allow for mechanical handling and to protect against possible damage.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use this item for flat steel sheets with an aluminum coating shipped as wrapped bundles secured by metal strapping; it does not apply to coils or loose sheets. Review Note, item 106722 for any special provisions.
- State on the BOL: “Aluminum-coated steel sheet, wrapped, metal‑strapped — NMFC 106720, Class 65, non-haz,” and include bundle count and accurate weights per skid.
- Verify packaging before pickup: full wrap intact, straps tight, edge/corner protectors under bands, and dry condition. Add VCI or plastic sheeting if moisture exposure is possible.
- Handle with long forks or a spreader to avoid bowing edges. Keep bundles level on dunnage, block and brace in the trailer, and avoid stacking unless palletized and rated.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 65—no density calculations and fewer reclass or inspection charges.
- Compliance with wrapped, metal‑strapped packaging reduces coating abrasion and edge damage, lowering OS&D claims and scrap.
- Non-hazardous iron/steel freight broadens carrier availability and lanes, improving capacity and lead times.
- Bundle-friendly handling speeds dock turns and supports LTL consolidation, cutting per-shipment costs for fabricators and OEMs.
