How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL: “Spark plug shells or shell bushings, iron or steel, NMFC 106760, Class 70, boxed” to lock the correct rating.
- Pack small metal shells in partitioned cartons or trays, add VCI paper to limit corrosion, fill voids with kraft or foam, and seal with 2-inch tape.
- Keep each box under 50 lb for safer handling; palletize with 4-way entry pallets, corner boards, and stretch wrap, then label “Box X of Y.”
- Do not mix with ceramics, lubricants, or assembled plugs; segregate and declare separately to avoid reclass or unexpected accessorials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass charges across carriers.
- Non-hazardous, boxed metal parts move faster on docks and avoid hazmat surcharges.
- Robust box and pallet prep cuts damage and shortage claims on dense small parts.
- Clear NMFC labeling keeps audits smooth and stabilizes freight rates over time.
