How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the goods are iron or steel structural shoes/struts (not automotive parts) and list NMFC 106820 with Class 50 on the BOL.
- Bundle like pieces with steel or heavy poly strapping and edge protectors; example: 8–12 struts per bundle, two to three bundles per pallet.
- Palletize with full-length dunnage to prevent overhang, cap sharp ends, and lightly wrap to keep oil or rust inhibitor from contacting other freight.
- Record accurate piece counts and pallet weights, note finishes (galvanized, primed), and label long pallets with center-of-gravity for safer handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 rating typically yields lower LTL rates versus higher classes, improving per-pound costs on heavy steel components.
- Single, simple classification reduces reclass and rebill risk, minimizing administrative time and surprise charges.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, helping keep projects on schedule.
- Efficient bundling and palletizing cut handling units and floor space, lowering accessorial exposure and damage claims.
