How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List “Skelp, NMFC 106860, Class 50, Non-Hazardous” on the BOL and note coil orientation (eye to the sky or eye horizontal) for correct handling.
- Package coils with steel strapping and edge protectors; use wood cradles or skids and block/brake inside the trailer. For corrosion control, add VCI wrap or moisture barrier.
- Handle with coil rams, C-hooks, or properly sized slings; avoid clamp trucks that can damage edges. For cut lengths, bundle tightly with dunnage and multiple bands.
- No density is required for rating, but share coil OD/ID, width, and approximate weight so carriers plan equipment and axle loading accurately.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 delivers predictable, competitive LTL rates for heavy steel, reducing quote variance and surprise reclasses.
- Simplified rating—no density calculation—cuts admin time and speeds tendering while lowering the chance of inspection disputes.
- Clear skelp labeling and proper coil packaging reduce damage claims and detention from rework at pickup or delivery.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and training requirements, widening carrier options and improving transit reliability.
