How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the product fits “Tees or Zees, NOI” (e.g., T-bars, Z-purlins) rather than angles or channels to avoid miscoding and reclass fees.
- Nest shapes in alternating orientation and band tightly with steel strapping and edge protectors; place on wood runners so forklifts can lift without bending flanges.
- For long lengths (20–40 ft), use spreader bars or forklift extensions and block at thirds with dunnage to prevent sag and flange damage in transit.
- Print on the BOL: “NMFC 107120, Class 50, non-density,” and list piece count, bundle count, longest length, and total weight for fast carrier acceptance.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: Fixed Class 50 eliminates density calculations, reducing reweigh/reclass charges for mixed-length steel bundles.
- Lower cost per pound: Heavy, durable iron/steel at Class 50 often secures better LTL linehaul rates than higher classes.
- Fewer claims: Proper nesting, edge protection, and runner-supported bundles minimize flange nicks and twist, protecting resale quality.
- Simplified compliance: Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and speeds dock throughput, improving cycle time on steel projects.
