How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Bundle trusses tightly with steel banding and use wood dunnage and corner protectors so gusset plates and chord edges don’t cut into straps.
  2. Declare the exact longest length and overall footprint; long, rigid pieces can trigger overlength handling and affect LTL pickup planning.
  3. Load on racks or cradle the bundles with blocks to keep webs off the deck and prevent flexing; use spreader bars when lifting heavy spans.
  4. Mark center of gravity and orientation (top/bottom) on each bundle, especially for galvanized or painted trusses to avoid coating damage.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 50 simplifies rating and quoting, reducing reclass disputes and speeding up LTL bookings.
  • No density required lowers the risk of reweigh/remeasure fees and keeps costs predictable across different truss designs.
  • Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and enables broader carrier options for construction timelines.
  • Proper bundling and racks minimize handling damage, cutting claim exposure and project delays on structural deliveries.
