How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Package the wire rope or strand on a reel, in a crate, or boxed and banded to a pallet; cap sharp cut ends. This NMFC applies only when shipped in packages.
  2. Print NMFC 107520 and Class 50 on the BOL, and note attached hardware—chains, clamps, clips, hooks, sockets, shackles, thimbles, turnbuckles, or links—for accurate billing.
  3. Stabilize heavy reels: chock flanges, strap in two directions, and use edge protectors. Pad or sleeve protruding fittings to prevent punctures and claim risk.
  4. Bundle mixed lengths cleanly and tag each bundle. Keep dimensions within standard LTL limits to avoid oversize fees even though the class is fixed.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable rating: fixed Class 50 removes density guesswork and cuts reclass disputes.
  • Lower rate base on heavy metal reels delivers measurable savings for rigging, construction, and marine suppliers.
  • Rope shipped with fittings under one NMFC streamlines quoting, BOL prep, and receiving—fewer line items and accessorial surprises.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and special handling, speeding pickups and cross-dock flow.
