How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 107610 on the BOL and write: “Irons (Flatirons/Sadirons), non-electric, NOI, in boxes — Class 70.” Note if stands are included or not.
- Choose sturdy double-wall cartons; wrap each iron to prevent metal-on-metal abrasion and add corner/edge protectors. Partition multiple units so they cannot collide.
- Palletize dense cartons on a 4-way pallet with no overhang. Place heavier boxes low, fill voids, then band and stretch-wrap tightly for short, rigid load movement.
- Mark cartons HEAVY when appropriate and show piece count (e.g., 4 irons + 2 stands). Photos of packed boxes help if carriers audit or if claims arise.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 70 rating streamlines quoting and limits reclass charges for these dense, compact cast-iron items.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and simplifies carrier acceptance across LTL networks.
- Boxed packing standard reduces handling risk and claim exposure versus loose metal goods.
- One NOI item covers flatirons or sadirons with or without stands, simplifying SKU setup and BOL creation across vintage or specialty housewares lines.
