NMFC Description Class

107830.03 If shipper declines to release each pound to a value not exceeding $5.00 per pound, the shipment will not be accepted.

Notes

Note 107834: NOTE-The released value must be entered on shipping order and bill of lading in the following form: "The agreed or declared value of the property is hereby specifically stated by the shipper to be not exceeding _______ per pound." If the shipper declines or fails to declare the value or agree to a released value in writing, the shipment will not be accepted, but if a shipment is inadvertently accepted, charges will initially be assessed on the basis of the rating for the highest valuation provided. Upon proof of lower actual value, freight charges will be adjusted to the basis of the class or rate applicable in connection with such actual value. In no instance will carriers' liability exceed the highest value for which classes are provided. (Classes herein based on released value have been authorized by the Interstate Commerce Commission in Released Rates Order No. MC-455 of August 17, 1960, as amended April 25, 1963 and March 18, 1980.)

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify eligibility: base‑metal chains, plastic beads, resin bangles, or similar non‑precious items with no mounted precious stones all fall under item 107830.
  2. Pack to Package 2213 standards: individually bag small pieces to prevent scuffing, use partitions for bracelets/necklaces, then place in rigid corrugated master boxes for stackable, box-ready LTL.
  3. Mark paperwork and cartons clearly: “Costume Jewelry – NMFC 107830 – Non‑precious, no stones.” Include invoices or specs to avoid misclassification as precious jewelry during inspections.
  4. Select the correct subclass within 100–200 per Note 107834 and carrier rules; when shipping mixed SKUs, rate to the least-protected packaging in the lot to prevent reclass fees.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate 107830 use minimizes reclass and inspection charges, stabilizing LTL quotes for retailers, event merch, and marketplace sellers.
  • Package 2213-compliant boxes are cube-efficient and stackable, lowering damage risk and helping carriers price more favorably.
  • Clear “non‑precious, no stones” documentation avoids delays and achieves faster dock turns and fewer exceptions.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps maintain on-time delivery for launches, pop-ups, and peak season drops.
