How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List as “Insulated food/beverage jugs, metal or metal‑plastic jacketed — boxed” on the BOL and rate NMFC 107840, Class 150 to avoid reclass.
- Use sturdy cartons with corner guards; immobilize spigots, caps, and handles using foam or corrugated inserts to prevent punctures and dents.
- Drain and dry jugs before shipping; mark cartons “This Side Up” to protect vacuum jackets and spouts. Example: 1‑gal metal cooler with plastic jacket, boxed.
- Palletize snugly with no overhang, cross‑stack cartons, add a top sheet, and stretch‑wrap to stabilize and prevent strap marks on metal surfaces.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 150 pricing speeds quotes and reduces costly reclass disputes.
- Boxed packaging lowers damage risk on dent‑prone metal jackets, cutting claim costs and returns.
- Non‑hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and simplifies carrier selection and training.
- Pallet‑friendly cartons improve cube and stacking efficiency, helping offset higher Class 150 rates.
