How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book the shipment at Class 150 and list NMFC 107870 on the BOL; choose “loose” or “packaged” based on your protection level and handling plan.
- For loose moves, band the kettle to a robust skid, block legs and frame, and cap all steam jacket ports and valves; pad rim and controls to prevent crush damage.
- If crating, use a pallet base with 4-way entry, brace the body to stop roll/tilt, and label “Do Not Lift By Rim” to protect the jacket shell.
- Remove or immobilize accessories (agitators, tilt locks, thermometers), bag hardware, and secure to the base; example: strap an 80-gal kettle to a 48x48 skid with corner protection.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass disputes, improving rate predictability for LTL and volume moves.
- Option to ship loose or packaged keeps classification the same, letting refurbishers and OEMs balance speed vs. protection without price surprises.
- Proper port capping and rim protection cut high-cost damage claims tied to dented jackets and broken fittings, preserving asset value.
- Non-hazmat status widens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, keeping lane choices flexible and costs controlled.
