How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item matches the NOI listing: iron or steel vessels, glass-enameled allowed, steam jacketed or not, and not mounted on bolsters or frames. Pack in sturdy boxes or fully enclosed crates.
- Protect fragile surfaces and fittings. Cushion glass enamel with closed‑cell foam, cap nozzles and ferrules, and add internal bracing or cradle blocks to prevent round tanks from rolling.
- Drain and dry the vessel before packing. Use a vapor barrier and desiccant for enamel finishes, mark This Side Up, and avoid strapping directly over the shell; route bands around the crate.
- For a 150‑gal brew kettle, use a plywood crate with 2 in foam, block at legs, add shock/tilt indicators, and ensure forklift runners under the crate for safe LTL handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable quoting with fixed Class 85—no density calculation—reducing reclass risk and surprise charges.
- Broad coverage for iron or steel vessels, including glass‑enameled and steam jacketed units, streamlining SKUs and rate management.
- Non‑hazardous status widens carrier options and can lower accessorial exposure for breweries, distilleries, and food processors.
- Proper crating minimizes damage and downtime, protecting high‑value equipment and lowering claims and replacement costs.
