How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify contents match typical maternity advertising samples (pamphlets, coupons, travel-size lotions). If any liquids are included, seal each in leakproof bags with absorbent liner and use interior dividers to meet NMFC Item 170 packaging rules.
  2. Calculate density to determine class within 85–150. Example: a 24×16×12 in box = 2.67 cu ft; at 28 lb, density ≈ 10.5 pcf. Use your carrier’s NMFC chart to map density to the correct class.
  3. Mark cartons and the BOL as “Advertising Sample Kits—Maternity, Prepaid, Boxes” and reference NMFC 107991. Include “Class per density” to signal the density-based rating.
  4. Confirm any special notes in item 107992 before tender. For hospital or clinic deliveries, add consignee reference numbers and clearly mark “Prepaid—Samples” to reduce refusals.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based class lets you lower costs by right-sizing boxes and minimizing void space, potentially moving to a lower class within the 85–150 range.
  • Prepaid designation and clear labeling reduce billing disputes with healthcare consignees, accelerating receiving and cutting administrative follow-up.
  • Rigid boxed packaging aligned with Item 170 decreases damage risk and reclass fees, improving claim outcomes and carrier acceptance.
  • Explicit NMFC 107991 reference speeds up quoting and inspections, enabling more predictable LTL rates and transit for time-sensitive sample campaigns.
