How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 107993, Class 85, and packaging as “boxes” on the BOL; confirm the kit does not include a reloading press.
- Use partitioned cartons or inner polybags to contain small tools (shell holders, trimmers, funnels); add dunnage to prevent rattling and abrasion.
- Keep hazardous components out: no primers, powders, or propellants in these accessory-only kits to maintain non-hazardous status.
- For master packs, bundle multiple retail kits in a 275# test carton and label “Reloading Accessory Kits—No Press” to avoid confusion with machinery.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 delivers predictable LTL quotes without density calculations, speeding rate shopping and TMS setup.
- Non-hazardous classification reduces carrier restrictions and limits accessorial risk for sporting goods and e-commerce channels.
- Box-ready kits minimize packing labor and materials, improving throughput for distributors and 3PL fulfillment centers.
- Clear separation from press-included kits prevents misrating and claim disputes, protecting margins on multi-stop shipments.
