How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the product fits the item: boxed seed kits with soil or substitutes and plant food in trays not made of clay, or seeds embedded in cellulose/cotton batting.
  2. Calculate density to pick the correct class (100–150). Weigh the sealed carton, measure external L x W x H in inches, convert to cubic feet (L×W×H ÷ 1728), then divide weight by cubic feet.
  3. Package to contain particulates and moisture: line corrugated boxes with poly, seal trays or inner bags so soil and plant food cannot leak, and cushion to prevent cracking of plastic/fiber trays.
  4. Prepare for LTL handling: mark Keep Dry and This Side Up, band or shrink-wrap to pallets with corner protection, and place heavier cartons low to prevent crushing delicate seed media.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based rating provides a path to Class 100 on tighter, heavier packs, lowering LTL rates compared to lighter, bulkier loads.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids HazMat fees and special handling charges, simplifying paperwork and transit.
  • Clear item match (boxed kits; non-clay trays or embedded media) reduces inspection disputes and costly reclassifications.
  • Standardized boxing streamlines fulfillment for garden centers and DTC kits, cutting packing time and minimizing spill-related claims.
