Notes
Note 108158: NOTE-Applies only on lawn fertilizers designed to be connected to lawn sprinklers.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the kit matches NMFC criteria: plastic holder, fertilizer cartridges totaling at least 70 oz, and a hose no longer than 18 in. Check NMFC Note 108158 to validate composition.
- Pack with leak prevention in mind: keep cartridges upright in a poly bag, add corrugated dividers, cushion the holder and hose, and seal an RSC box. Mark orientation and include a contents label.
- Measure each box’s exterior length, width, and height after sealing, including bulges and corner protectors. Record dimensions on the BOL since this item uses a dimensions-based rating at Class 85.
- Palletize to protect cartridges: keep boxes within pallet footprint, stack evenly, stretch wrap and strap, and add a top sheet to deter moisture. Note “Non-Hazardous Fertilizer” for handling clarity.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating reduces reclass risk and speeds quoting, since carriers rely on stated box dimensions rather than density tests.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and paperwork, expanding carrier options and lowering total transportation cost.
- Boxed, standard kit packaging minimizes damage and leakage claims, improving OTIF performance for lawn and garden distributors and retailers.
- Clear kit criteria (≥70 oz cartridges, ≤18 in hose) limit inspection adjustments and chargebacks tied to nonconforming contents.
