How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package by ladder type and length: foam the rails, cap the ends, and band to a pallet with no overhang; mark Do Not Stack for long pieces.
- Combine multiple ladders into a tight bundle when lengths match to limit overlength surcharges; nest extension sections and add edge protectors under bands.
- State the material (aluminum, fiberglass, wood), longest dimension, and packaging on the BOL; reference NMFC 108700 Ladders Group when requesting a carrier-rated class.
- Load ladders longitudinally and away from fork tines; request no top load, and use corner boards to protect rails and rungs during handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct bundling and palletization reduce OS&D claims and speed dock turns, trimming delay costs and exception handling fees.
- Consolidating similar lengths can avoid multiple overlength adders, cutting total LTL accessorial charges per shipment.
- Clear BOL descriptors tied to NMFC 108700 minimize reclass/reweigh risks and produce more accurate initial rating.
- Consistent packaging standards for ladders improve cube efficiency and help negotiate stable contract rates across lanes.
